One Word On The Label Is Hiding What You're Really Breathing
“Fragrance.” One word, standing in for whatever they didn't have to name.
SUMMARY: You've probably seen the video: someone turns their candle over, and there's only one word on the label. “Fragrance.” That word can legally cover a mix of synthetic compounds a brand never has to name. Some of what turns up in that mix, formaldehyde, benzene, phthalates, has real, documented effects on the air in your home, not something you'd choose to breathe in for hours a night. Here's what the research actually found, why the fixes people try first don't solve it, and the two Autumn candles we built with nothing hidden behind that one word.
You read the back of everything. Just never this.
The moisturiser gets turned over. The food packet gets turned over. Somewhere along the way you got in the habit of checking what you're putting on your skin and in your body. But the thing you burn for hours every night, filling the air you're actually breathing, probably never gets the same look.
What that one word can actually contain
Burning scented candles indoors is a documented source of formaldehyde, and a peer-reviewed 2021 emissions study found scented candles release more fine particulate matter than unscented ones, an average of 17 volatile organic compounds per product. None of that shows up as anything other than “fragrance” on the label.
Formaldehyde
A recognised airway irritant. Burning scented candles indoors is a major source of it, and concentrations can climb in poorly ventilated rooms.
Benzene & toluene
Released when synthetic fragrance burns. Linked to headaches, dizziness and respiratory irritation with repeated exposure.
Phthalates
Used to bind synthetic fragrance to wax. Absorbed through skin and inhaled as vapour, and flagged as endocrine disruptors.

The fixes people try first, and why they don't work
Once you know that, the instinct is to patch it, but most of the patches don't actually touch the problem.
Switch to unscented
No “fragrance” line to worry about, but also none of the reason you wanted a candle in the first place.
Crack a window
Dilutes what's already in the air. Doesn't change what's being released in the first place.
Buy a “natural” candle
Some candles marketed as soy or natural are still blended with paraffin, or still hide a synthetic fragrance behind that same one word. Natural on the front doesn't guarantee it on the back.
So we built ours to say more
100% soy wax. A wooden wick. Pure essential oils, named on the label, not a single word covering a list you never see. If it's in the jar, it's on the jar. Every candle is still hand-poured in North Yorkshire.
Real, not a copy
You can smell the difference straight away. Essential oils smell like the actual plant, not a lab's version of one. Synthetic fragrance tends to go sweet and flat within twenty minutes; a candle built on real oils keeps telling your body the day's finished for a lot longer than that.
