What you're actually breathing
Burning scented candles indoors is a major source of formaldehyde. A peer-reviewed 2021 emissions study found scented candles release more fine particulate matter than unscented ones, averaging 17 volatile organic compounds per product. None of it shows up on the label, which is the real problem: you can't avoid what you can't see.
Formaldehyde
A recognised airway irritant. Burning scented candles indoors is a major source of it, and concentrations can climb in poorly ventilated rooms.
Benzene & toluene
Released when synthetic fragrance and paraffin burn. Linked to headaches, dizziness and respiratory irritation with repeated exposure.
Phthalates
Used to bind synthetic fragrance to wax. Absorbed through skin and inhaled as vapour, and flagged as endocrine disruptors.

And you'd never know from the label
Most candles are made from paraffin, a petroleum by-product, usually scented with synthetic fragrance. The ones marked “soy”? Often a blend: part soy, part something else. Either way the ingredient list is vague or missing, so even when you try to choose the clean option, you can't actually know what you're putting into your air.
So we kept it simple. Three things.

Made from soy, not petroleum. 100% soy, never a blend, so it burns cleaner with less soot.
Pure essential oils
Named plant oils for the scent. No synthetic fragrance, and no phthalates used to bind it.
A wooden wick
One simple wooden wick. No lead core, no wire, just a slow even burn and a soft crackle.
That's the whole candle. If you can't say what's in a candle in one breath, that's the problem we set out to fix.
But doesn't clean and simple mean weak?
It's the fair question, and the reason most brands never bother. Natural candles have a reputation for smelling of nothing once lit. Ours don't, because we use a generous load of pure essential oils and a wooden wick that burns hot and even. Simple, and strong.
