5 Reasons Your Candle Might Be Doing More Harm Than Good

“Read this before you light another candle”

SUMMARY: If you've ever wondered what's actually in the smoke when you light a scented candle, you're not being paranoid. Most candles release compounds you'd never knowingly breathe in — and the "natural" alternatives have a reputation for disappearing the moment you light them. Here's the research, and the candle we built because of it.

What you're actually breathing

Burning scented candles indoors is a major source of formaldehyde — in poorly ventilated rooms, concentrations can reach levels that cause upper airway irritation. A peer-reviewed 2021 emissions study found scented candles release more fine particulate matter than unscented ones, averaging 17 volatile organic compounds per product. None of this shows up on the label.

Formaldehyde

A recognised airway irritant. Burning scented candles indoors is a major source of it — concentrations can climb in poorly ventilated rooms.

Benzene & toluene

Released when synthetic fragrance and paraffin burn. Linked to headaches, dizziness and respiratory irritation with repeated exposure.

Phthalates

Used to bind synthetic fragrance to wax. Absorbed through skin and inhaled as vapour — flagged as endocrine disruptors.

So most people assume clean means weak

That trade-off is real — a lot of natural candles genuinely do under-throw. But clean and strong aren't opposites. They're just harder to get right, which is exactly why most brands haven't bothered.

5 reasons we build candles differently

  1. 01

It's not fear-mongering — it's what the emissions studies found

A peer-reviewed 2021 study measured what scented candles actually release when burned: an average of 17 volatile organic compounds per product, with roughly half producing at least one recognised carcinogenic air pollutant. We're not telling you to be scared. We're telling you why we do things differently.

  2. 02

Not all "soy" candles are actually 100% soy

Some candles marketed as soy are blended with paraffin or other waxes. Ours isn't a blend — it's 100% natural soy wax, and we say so because it's true, not because it sounds good on a label.

  3. 03

No synthetic fragrance. Just pure essential oils.

Every scent is blended from named essential oils, not an undisclosed synthetic fragrance formula. What's on the label is what's in the candle.

  4. 04

Clean doesn't mean it disappears when you light it

The most common complaint against natural candles is real: weak throw, gone in ten minutes. Ours is built to fill the room properly — that's the whole point of doing this the harder way.

“Smells super good, lasts long and the scent spreads across the room — even around the house.” — Harrison M., verified buyer
  5. 05

Handmade in Yorkshire, not an anonymous import

Every candle is hand-poured in Scarborough. You can trace exactly where it came from — most "clean" brands on the market can't say the same.

Questions people ask before switching

Will it actually smell like anything, or is this another weak natural candle?

This is the exact question we built the brand around. Every candle is tested to genuinely fill the room — not just smell nice unlit in the jar. If it doesn't perform for you, send it back within 60 days.

Is this safe to burn around kids, pets, or if I get headaches from candles?

There's no synthetic fragrance or paraffin in these candles, which are the most commonly reported triggers for candle headaches. We can't make medical claims, but we can tell you exactly what is and isn't in every candle we make.
